Faculty Resources

At Otterbein University, faculty members are important leaders in the effort to"internationalize" the curriculum and in the education of students. One such leadership role is through faculty development of short-term educational programs abroad.

Overseas study can be an effective educational tool in any academic discipline. Short-term programs abroad led by faculty create valuable intercultural learning opportunities for students who are not yet temperamentally, academically or linguistically ready for lengthy, integrated overseas experiences. The short duration and special group dynamics of faculty-led programs abroad, however, necessitates careful design and direction to maximize the students' academic and intercultural experiences while ensuring safety.

This web page has been designed by the Center for International Education and Global Engagement (CIEGE) to guide faculty members who are planning and directing faculty-led overseas programs. A Faculty Director, in assuming the responsibility for developing and leading an overseas study program, can expect to assume the roles of administrator, teacher, financial adviser, travel agent and counselor.  To prevent these roles from becoming overwhelming, especially if it is the first time a faculty member will be directing a faculty-led abroad, this web page provides specific suggestions on most aspects of directing overseas study.

New Program Information

Program Fact Sheet. (Formerly the "Administrative Checklist")
Faculty who are planning to lead a program with a travel component, either as part of an SYE or other on-campus course or program or as a course conducted entirely off-campus, must complete a Program Fact Sheet (Excel file). This form will aid in establishing the program fee to be charged to the students. This fee must be reviewed by the Executive Director of the CIEGE and approved by the Vice President for Academic Affairs and the Vice President  for Business Affairs prior to officially advertising the course and before registration for the course can begin. This applies to courses and programs with both domestic and international travel components.

Travel Waiver Form
Everyone, including faculty members, students, relatives and others participants, traveling with and/or generally participating in an Otterbein University faculty-led travel course or program must sign a Travel Waiver Form (Word Document). Students will complete this and other required forms electronically and download them to their student file at www.otterbein.abroadoffice.net. Faculty should send a complete list of everyone in the group to the Center for International Education and Global Engagement no later than two weeks prior to the commencement of travel. This form can also be completed electronically by the students when they complete their profiles through CIEGE.

Program Management

This excel spread sheet is used to track budget and expenditures. The form can automatically calculate exchange rates and link expenses to receipts.
