in Semester at Sea (SAS) In January 2014,
Center for International Education and Global Engagement (CIEGE) Assistant
Director Deborah Gavlik represented Otterbein University during a Semester At
Sea (SAS) site visit. Ms. Gavlik observed faculty and staff orientation and
sailed with the ship, the MV Explorer, on the first leg of the voyage from
Ensenada, Mexico to Hilo, Hawaii. Over 550 students from 200 universities are
traveling for the entire Spring Semester, with stops in Japan, China, Vietnam,
Singapore, Myanmar, India, Mauritius, South Africa, Ghana, Morocco and England.
Evening Lecture “Semester at Sea” is a
wonderful opportunity for students to travel around the world and learn about
multiple countries and cultures, according to Ms. Gavlik. “Students are
required to take a Global Lens course, in which they deepen their understanding
of specific features of life in the countries they will visit. Students also enroll in three other courses
during the course of the semester, and earn transfer credits from the
University of Virginia.” In class
